Hello formulating friends! A favorite, incredible herb I use in formulation, and a super fun one at that is the famous Butterfly Pea Flower, aka Clitoria ternatea. Originates in subtropical areas like asia, north & southwest pacific.

FACTS

  • Anthocyanins are what gives the coloring compounds & they are extracted by water.
  • It’s a real diva and challenging to work with as it’s stability is affected by Ph, temperature & light.
  • Used for many medical treatments to reduce anxiety, increase work productivity, and as an anti-inflammatory.
  • Contains free radical scavanging activity & has potential as an antioxidant.
  • Antioxidative power in methanol extract = to that of L-ascorbic acid.

IT CONTAINS:

  • natural cyclotides, compounds that have anti-HIV effects
  • polyphenols or proanthocyanidin
  • flavonoids

THESE TOGETHER:

  • protect from free radical damage
  • have powerful antioxidant activity to increase collagen, elasticity
  • Prevent wrinkles
  • give firmer, plumper skin &healthier complexion

COLOR VARIATION:

  • pink at low Ph of 3
  • rich violet or blue at Ph 4
  • purple at Ph 5
  • green at Ph 9

FORMUALTING TIPS:

  • Try and get a Ph of 5 to get the most stable and lasting purple color.
  • Use a chelator to help keep Ph stable
  • Use dark jars to prevent light exposure
  • Keep in cool tempuratures
  • Keep away from light
  • Use air tight packaging

HOW TO USE:
Infuse a few petals in hot water for 15 minutes. Then strain. Use in your cosmetics and adjust Ph after with your preservative system to about Ph of 5.
